Smelting uses heat to separate the valuable metal from the rest of the ore. Smelting usually requires a reduction agent, or another chemical, to separate metal from its ore. In the earliest smelters, the reduction agent was carbon in the form of charcoal. Charcoal burned with hematite ore, for instance, smelts iron.

Instead, I propose two new items, perhaps called 'rich iron/gold ore', 'dense iron/gold ore' or maybe just 'iron/gold ore rock'. These items would look like pieces of stone with prominent speckles of iron or gold all over them. While useless on their own, they could be smelted into their respective ingots just like regular ore blocks.

Iron Ore: Sedimentary Rock - Pictures, Definition & More

Earth's most important iron ore deposits are found in sedimentary rocks. They formed from chemical reactions that combined iron and oxygen in marine and fresh waters. The two most important minerals in these deposits are iron oxides: hematite (Fe 2 O 3) and magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ). These iron ores have been mined to produce almost every iron and ...

Separating Iron and gold from rock. by Elsa Huber

How Is Iron Extracted From the Earth? - Reference.com

Iron ores in the form of hematite (ferrous oxide) and magnetite are removed from the earth through mining. The use of heavy mining equipment is necessary to dig out large pits in an area with a large deposit of iron ore; however, because iron does not occur naturally, it is necessary to use a blast furnace to separate or refine iron from the other substances in the iron ore.
