Brooks Range Gold Rushes. However, the first major influx of people of European descent from Canada and the contiguous United States into the Brooks Range started just after the height of the Klondike Gold Rush, when disappointed prospectors flocked westward after hearing about the discovery of gold in the Koyukuk River and near Nome.
The district's northern border is along the crest of the Brooks Range; a range which slopes toward the southeast from a crest line running between 5,000 and 7,000 feet. Wide valleys of some of the major forks of the Chandalar River merge downstream into what's known as the Yukon Flats, a swampy area varying between sea level and 1,000 feet.
This Alaska Placer mine is a rare find and consists of 1920 acres of State mining claims in the Koyukuk Mining District of the Brooks range. Now access is by winter trail or by air but the Ambler Road Project is scheduled to bring the road within 5 miles of the mine.

Although nuggets were lost, they represented a tiny fraction of the gold the old timers got. There might only be one 2 ounce nugget in a 1000 foot by 1000 foot area. To scoop up and and reprocess all that material for a single 2 ounce nugget is a money losing proposition.
